Living on the Saanich Peninsula
Retiring We never thought about retiring in any other place than Ottawa or, just possibly, somewhere nearby in Eastern Ontario. But we were already 'empty nesting' when John was left responsible for the care of his mother in 1994. Angélique and Charles had already flown away, to start careers as an accountant and a biochemist. Both are fluently bilingual. (Which means French and English for you non-Canadian readers - Elaine is a native francophone and John can stumble along.) We knew that their career paths could lead them all over the map, as indeed they have.
We were both familiar with Saanichton. There had been a decade of family visits and health emergencies. And we were both at stages in our careers where early retirements - with penalties, of course - were feasible. When John's father died in the spring of 1994 it took us just three days to decide to sell up in Ottawa and move our 'empty nest'. The alternate would have been to move John's chairbound mom from the superior care facility at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital to some as yet unknown facility in Eastern Ontario. So, in mid-July, and John not quite 52 yet, we left Ottawa and Went West.
